Berlin Goes Dirt this Saturday

September 14, 2018

Lake Odessa, Michigan (Thursday, September 13, 2018) - For the second consecutive year, the American Ethanol Late Model Tour (AELMT) and the American Ethanol Modified Tour Presented by Allstar Performance (AEMODT) get set to do battle at Berlin Raceway as Berlin Goes Dirt.  Over the next three weeks, crews will try to master a wide, fast and competitive four tenths mile uniquely shaped playground, working to solidify their names in American Ethanol History.  The excitement all begins this Saturday, September 15th.

This first weekend, the stage is set with both American Ethanol Tours roaring into town with amazing points battles.  For the AELMT, the YellowHose.com 40 marks the first Tour race since LaSalle, Illinois on August 18th, after Merritt Speedway cancelled their Labor Day Weekend show on September 2nd due to weather.  Since then, drivers in the top five in points have continued to race around the area, with points leader Brandon Thirlby winning the 2018 Track Championship at I-96 Speedway, Eric Spangler picking up feature wins, Nick Kurtz being crowned the 2018 Merritt Speedway Track Champion and Travis Stemler attempting to compete in the World 100 from Eldora Speedway before it was postponed.

Thirlby, who goes into Berlin with a 56-point advantage over Spangler, 90 points over Stemler and 118 points over David Mielke, has some success on the dirt at Berlin.  Going back one year ago, Thirlby set fast time in the first trip to the Raceway, before finishing on the podium the following week.  Thirlby will battle to defend his points lead while continuing to nurse a broken right foot suffered back in August.

As for the AEMODT, they enter Berlin for the second of four straight weeks of racing, with the running of the Lane Automotive 30. The top two coming into the weekend, Jacob Poel and David Mielke come off of a hard-fought night at Merritt Speedway, that saw tempers flare between both teams.  As a result of the weekend, both drivers were fined and placed on probation for the remainder of the year (read more here).  As for the battle for the 2018 AEMODT Championship, Poel comes in with a 55-point lead over Mielke and a 67-point lead over Chad Bauer.

In last year’s event, the pair shared the responsibility of the podium, switching roles entirely in the two weeks.  Week one saw David Mielke pick up the win ahead of Curt Spalding and Poel.  In their return one week later, Poel went to victory lane ahead of Joe Rokos, while Mielke rounded out the podium.

As for the rest of the event, the American Ethanol Tours will be joined by Michigan Street Stocks this first week.  Pit gates open at 2:00 p.m., with General Admission gates opening at 4:30 p.m.  Street Stock rules, ticket prices, and more can be found online at berlinraceway.com.
